Tai Chi

What is Tai Chi?

Tai Chi, also known as Tai Chi Chuan or Taijiquan, is an ancient Chinese martial art that has evolved into a popular form of exercise and meditation. It is characterized by slow, flowing movements and a focus on deep breathing and mental concentration. Tai Chi is often practiced for its numerous health benefits, including improved balance, flexibility, and stress reduction.

The practice of Tai Chi involves a series of choreographed movements, known as forms or routines, that are performed in a slow and controlled manner. These movements are designed to promote the flow of vital energy, or "qi," throughout the body, according to traditional Chinese medicine principles.

Tai Chi is not only a martial art but also a mind-body practice that encourages a state of calm and mindfulness. It is suitable for people of all ages and fitness levels and is often recommended for promoting overall wellbeing. Tai Chi is sometimes practiced in groups or classes, providing a social aspect.

Tai Chi at Open Heart Energy

Open Heart Energy offers periodic Tai Chi training which consists of 14, 45-75 minute sessions over a period of several weeks. We will learn the entire Short Yang Tai Chi form, also known as the Standard 24 Yang.

In our Tai Chi course, we will start each session with a gentle warm-up, followed by several Qi-Gong exercises (Qi-Gong are repeated movements aimed at cultivating energy in the body,) and then proceed to learn the Short Yang form, adding new moves in each session. Since this course is based on progression, each session builds on the last and thus, drop-ins are not allowed. It is a complete package. You may miss a class and make it up the following session, but it is not recommended to miss more than one class in a row.
